Food for the soul: 10 ways to enrich your life

We only live one life, so why make it boring and lifeless? So many people, myself included, spend so much time wallowing over the past and sitting around not doing much with their lives. Not only that, making poor choices and bad decisions repeatedly will set you in a never ending cycle. Here are 10 ways that you can impact your life to make you a much happier person:o-HOW-MUCH-SLEEP-facebook

1. Beauty Sleep

You may be rolling your eyes right now at this one, but believe it or not sleep is one of the best ways to enrich your life. Getting the right amount of sleep will ensure that you are wide awake and able to enjoy what each day brings. Getting too little sleep will cause you to feel tired and drowsy all day, dampening any chance of getting anything remotely productive done. On the other hand, too much sleep is likely to leave you feeling lethargic and lazy. No two people are the same and others will require more sleep than others. Find an amount that works best for your body and aim to get this much sleep each night (yes, including the weekends!) Go to bed at a reasonable time each night and then wake up at the same time each morning, you will feel so much better for it. Not only that, ‘beauty sleep’ is no joke. The benefits a good nights’ sleep can have to your skin and complexion are golden.


2. Read often

When I say read, I don’t mean scrolling through your Newsfeed and catching up with everyone and their pet dog’s gossip. I really mean read. Whether it be a newspaper, a blog or a good book, aim to read at least one thing everyday. Reading helps your mind to think and process efficiently and keeps it working properly. Not only that, but you are stimulating your mind with thoughts and emotions that you cannot simply conjure up from staring blankly at a television or Social Media. If you struggle to read or find it hard to focus on something for long periods then start small. Work your way up and the more you read the easier and better it gets. Trust me on this one.


3. Get out of the house more

This one is rich coming from me, but everyone needs to get out of the house more. Being stuck indoors all day is not good for anyone. Staring at the same four walls for hours on end can encourage unproductiveness. I find that to stay sane I need to get out of the house at least once a day, even if it’s just to my local shop to pick up some milk. A change of scenery really does make the world of difference. So go out, whether it be on your own or with friends! Go for a walk, go shopping, go to the pub! Just go out and enjoy what life has to offer outside of your front door.


4. Acknowledge your achievements

So many people do not take credit for their own achievements and I think this needs to change. It is so important to believe in yourself and your capabilities. So much so, that when you actually do something that you are proud of, then do not be afraid to proud of it. Take pride in your own capabilities and be happy when others take notice too. I often like to treat myself to a little something when I’ve succeeded in something particularly trying or difficult and feel I have jumped a hurdle and made progress. Being able to be happy with yourself and what you do is one of the single most important things you can do in life to make you a happier person. Doubting yourself will only make things worse and can lead you to perhaps not even make choices that could benefit you in the long run.

5. Be there for others

So few of us are able to lead a life in complete isolation. To be alone for a substantial about of time is unhealthy. So you should surround yourself with people that you are able to connect with and make you a better person. If you are down and need a shoulder to cry on, these people will be there for you. So, in turn you must be there for them too when they need you the most. Offering yourself to be a listener, a comforter, an extra hand, an advice giver, a shoulder to cry on, or even a drinking buddy, will tighten bonds between you and the people that are closest to you. Life is not all about taking what you can get, but giving back in return.


6. Plan for the future

It can be a daunting thing to think about what you want your future to look like, especially if you’re young and don’t quite know what you want from life in the long run. But setting realistic goals is a great way to reaching your overall long term plan. Setting some money aside from your pay packet each week/month for something in particularly, like a holiday, a car or something you’ve been eyeing up for months, is a great way to help plan for the future and the more you stick to it the easier it will get each time. Also, consider where you might want to be in five years time and then consider what you need to do to get there. But start small or you a likely to fall at the first hurdle; life should be a marathon and not a sprint.


7. Do things that make you happy

No one deserves to be unhappy, so you should always strive to do things that make you smile and enjoy life. It doesn’t even have to be anything big, whether you find enjoyment from going shopping, reading a good book, going on a long walk or simply spending time with your loved ones, do not be afraid to do things for yourself. We all need some ‘me time’ every now and then so don’t feel guilty about it. Life is too short to be miserable and unfulfilled.


8. Don’t let the past define you

We all have a past and we all have moments or memories that we wish had gone differently or never happened. Do not let these moments define you, and instead learn and grow from them. It’s unhealthy to hold onto bad memories and let them scupper your chances of change or fulfilment. Been in a bad relationship? Forget it, you’ve moved on. Have an irrational fear thanks to a bad experience? Define why you felt this way or how it happened and determine how you can change or avoid it from happening again. You have eyes in the front of your head for a reason, so bound forward into life, rather than hesitantly walking backwards.


9. Keep your living space tidy

I will be the first to admit that I am not a very tidy person, but when I do make the effort to keep my bedroom tidy and organised I feel much more relaxed in my surroundings. The age old saying couldn’t be more correct; a tidy space makes a tidy mind. Surrounding yourself with clutter really goes clutter your brain, and can make finding things an absolute nightmare. Organise your space and you will organise your mind at the same time. Being able to know exactly where things are when you need them will not only make what you’re doing that much quicker but also bring you satisfaction. Even if it just means making your bed every morning or actually putting your dirty clothes into the laundry basket, rather than on the floor at the foot of your bed, it’s a start. Baby steps!


10. Find the good in everything

And finally, probably one of the most important things to think about when going through life is to always try and find the good in any situation presented to you. And yes, this includes the all of the bad stuff too! No matter what you are doing, you should always try and find the positives and try not let the negatives get to you. If you miss the bus, you should always be thankful that you actually have the money to pay for your bus fare. If you’re in a job that you hate, you should always be grateful that you have a job that pays your bills and living expenses. And if you’re really unhappy, there are always other opportunities available should you wish to work for them. Being able to see the positives in a negative can be tricky, but easily done if gone about with the right attitude. A positive attitude is the way forward.

There are so many other ways in which you can fulfil your life, but these are just my top 10. The best way to ensure that you gain the most out of life is to do things the way that works best for you.
